This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Custodian position for the Department of Recreational Sports at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Department of Recreational Sports (DRS) is a unit of Student Affairs that is committed to advancing student success. Transformative student learning is advanced through programs, services, and facilities, which contribute to health and a culture of well-being at Oregon State University. This position will adhere to all OSU and Department of Recreational Sports (DRS) policies and procedures. The goal of DRS Custodial Services is to provide a clean, safe, and welcoming environment in all DRS facilities. The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to the successful delivery of DRS programs and services through seamless integration of exemplary custodial services within all department areas. Custodians are committed to the overall success and satisfaction of DRS participants and the OSU Community. Custodians perform cleaning and general maintenance in support of department efforts to sustain its facilities and assets. Custodians provide services and support in all DRS facilities (Dixon Recreation Center, McAlexander Field House, Student Legacy Park (SLP) Complex, SLP Tennis Center, SLP Pavilion.)

Key Responsibilities

75% ACTIVITY SPACE CLEANING
Cleans multiple spaces within Recreational Sports facilities (Dixon Recreation Center, McAlexander Field House, Student Legacy Park, SLP Tennis Center, SLP Pavilion) including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing toilets, sinks, showers, saunas, and locker room spaces. Cleans and sanitizes various recreation/athletic spaces that include gyms, courts, multipurpose rooms, fitness equipment rooms and weight rooms that consist of a variety of floor surfaces which include rubber, urethane, wood, and carpet. Cleans common spaces that include lounge space and associated furniture and amenities, entry areas, offices and work rooms, breakrooms/kitchenettes, all walls and other surfaces, windows, and mirrors. Cleans sport and activity equipment storage spaces in addition to maintenance work/storage spaces. Cleans specialized spaces which include two climbing walls, a natatorium, Dixon KITS and Our Little Village Childcare spaces, and Dixon Café. Refill dispensers, dust/sweep, mop, strip, wax, and scrub floors. Vacuuming and carpet extraction, picking up trash and debris, emptying garbage and recycling bins, compost s and wastebaskets. Collects/sorts recycling packaging materials, placing materials in appropriate s in disposal areas.

15% STUDENT LEAD WORK COORDINATION
Provides lead work for up to 2 student employees. Leads tasks and works one-on-one with student employees to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facilities environment.

5% EXTERIOR CLEANING
Cleans outdoor spaces (Dixon Recreation Center, Sand Volleyball Courts, Student Legacy Park, Peavy Sports Fields, Challenge Course) that include trash and debris pick-up and removal, empty and maintenance of trash and recyclables s. May use hand and power equipment to remove debris and leaves from exterior recreation/activity/park spaces (courts/fields.) May utilize powered riding equipment to perform cleaning and maintenance of synthetic turf and courts, cleaning of surrounding hard surface spaces. Will power wash and/or water broom multiple types of surfaces with electric and/or gas-powered equipment. Utilizes department utility cart to assist in efficient performance of tasks. Washes outdoor windows and surfaces, shovels snow/ice, and removes other types of debris.

2% MINOR MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS
Changes incandescent, LED and fluorescent lighting and cleans fixtures and diffusers. Monitors and secures facility signage as appropriate and reports items in need of extensive repair or replacement. Clears clogged drains and toilets, replaces batteries in automatic air fresheners, faucet valves and automatic paper towel and soap dispensers. Performs minor maintenance of custodial equipment, changes hoses, belts, or bags on vacuum cleaners. Changes brushes, pads, squeegee blades on floor equipment, tightens fasteners, reports needed repairs for maintenance and safety concerns.

2% SUPPLIES & MATERIALS
Stocks restrooms with paper products and sanitary supplies, liquid soap, distributes supplies to multiple custodial support areas throughout all facilities. Refills storage areas and/or cleaning carts, cleans carts and custodial equipment at the end of shifts. Supports department towel program by monitoring and assisting in the maintenance of clean and soiled towel s. Completes necessary inventory or requisitions requested.

1% MISCELLANEOUS
Moves furniture/sports equipment for proper room/space configuration, cleaning purposes, and for floor care work. Other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

  • Physical ability to perform work.
  • This position requires CPR and AED certification and additional training and will be provided by the Department upon hire and should be completed withing the first 90 days of employment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Six (6) months of experience performing routine janitorial duties in a commercial, educational, or public environment.
  • Willingness to work any shift.
  • Ability to understand and produce written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Successful experience as a custodian or housekeeper.
  • Experience working in an educational or institutional setting.
  • An eye for detail.
  • Dedication to a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Experience in cleaning and maintaining hard surface flooring including tile, wood and marmoleum, and sports performance surfaces (rubber/gym/urethane) and indoor/outdoor synthetic turf.
  • Experience in cleaning locker rooms/showers/saunas/changing rooms.
  • Experience with cleaning up blood borne pathogens.
  • Experience with cleaning public venues and public-use facilities.
  • Experience with cleaning recreational/athletic facilities.
  • A demonstratable commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position works in various environments including but not limited to:
Recreation/sport/activity space, office/work environment, locker room/restrooms, exterior hardscape/grounds. This position may work outside during seasonally varying weather conditions. This position interacts with participants and the general public on a daily basis. A typical work shift is Tue-Sat 4am-1230pm, Wed-Sun 4am-1230pm, Thu-Mon 4am-1230pm, Sun-Thu 4am-1230pm, 5 days per week which may include weekends. Has the potential of serving in an on-call rotation for after-hours clean-up needs throughout the year. May need to flex schedule to accommodate special events/needs.
