Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of this position is to work closely with the athletic fields supervisor on our management practices; maintain athletic turf-grass to very high expectations; prepare athletic fields and facilities for practices, games, and special events; perform day-to-day maintenance on facilities equipment; and work athletic and specials events as scheduled. Position is assigned to manage baseball field and facilities.

Responsible for all aspects of turf, facility and field maintenance to include:
  • Must have expertise in managing the specialized baseball clay dirt. This includes, but is not limited to, when to water, how much water is needed, when it needs specialized grooming and compaction. Clay easily becomes too hard (safety issue) or too soft (unplayable) and it is important to have this knowledge of how and when. This is both for the infield and the pitching mound.
  • Disease prevention due to the frequent covering of the infield grass. Grass needs to be covered to prevent too much moisture getting on the grass and clay, keeping the infield playable for both practices and games.
  • Knowledgeable and able to develop and follow safety and regulations when dealing with chemical handling and storage, gas, disposal processes, etc.
  • Develop proper horticultural practices as preventative maintenance allowing a strong root zone and healthy grass.
  • Mowing, fertilizing, seeding, sodding, top dressing, verti-cut, grading and watering of turf.
  • Determining the maintenance products and processes needed to repair department’s ground equipment and automatic irrigation system.
  • Maintain synthetic surfaces in field consisting of 5 different zones with different maintenance and draining protocols. Stay abreast of proper maintenance procedures and recommended treatments.
  • Make and implement fertilizer recommendations following proper precautions based on lab results.
  • Preparation for athletic and special events are to the exact specifications to ensure the highest level of safety for participants and spectators.
  • Onsite during games for field repair and maintenance.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
 
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

• Experience in athletic turf & ground management.
• Prior experience with baseball field maintenance.
• Prior experience in athletic turf & ground management.
• Ability to lift up to 30-60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required License or Certification

• A valid North Carolina Pesticide License must be obtained within six months of employment.
• A valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 60 days of start.
• Licenses must be maintained as a condition of employment.
