The Trades Specialist Sheet Metal Worker in the HVAC Department of University Facilities performs journey-level sheet metal work related to the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of sheet metal components, with a primary focus on HVAC systems. The incumbent works with various metal materials and uses specialized tools and equipment to construct air ducts, equipment enclosures, and various metal fixtures. This position may also supervise and instruct semi-skilled and unskilled staff in sheet metal tasks.

- Performs skilled sheet metal work in HVAC systems and related areas.
- Utilizes a wide range of tools including shears, brakes, riveters, welders, grinders, and soldering guns.
- Fabricates, installs, and repairs sheet metal components including air ducts, HVAC housings, cabinets, and laboratory equipment.
- Selects appropriate type and gauge of metal based on job specifications.
- Marks, cuts, bends, and shapes metal using hand tools and power equipment.
- Soldering, welding, or riveting parts together to assemble final products.
- Finishes edges and seams to ensure safety, functionality, and appearance.
- Inspects finished items for quality and adherence to design.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment, following all applicable safety guidelines.
- Keeps records of materials used and reports inventory needs.
- Uses computer to document service work performed.
- Operates computers used in the field of direct digital controls (D.D.C.).
- Provides high level of customer service.
- Expected to perform emergency service promptly when-notified.
- Reviews and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and written specifications to determine project requirements.
- Works with and direct outside contractors when necessary.
- May train and oversee junior or support personnel performing sheet metal tasks.

- Be willing and able to respond to after hour calls resulting from equipment and system failures that may arise at any time of day or any day of the week
- The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all HVAC systems.
- Since the activities of other employees depend upon the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.
Minimum Qualifications
The candidate must meet one of the following requirements:
- Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship,
- Or equivalent program;
- Or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Four years of full-time experience as a Sheet Metal Worker in the HVAC industry
- Have a working knowledge of computers and equipment used in the field facilities operations and HVAC control systems
Physical Demands
Bending, twisting, ability to transport 50 pounds, ascend/descend ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Work with or around high-pressure steam, high-voltage electrical systems and rotating equipment.
