Essential Job Duties

Join our Grounds and Fleet Services team and keep our campus moving! As a Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician, you’ll diagnose and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment—from light-duty vehicles to heavy trucks and ground equipment. Your technical expertise will help ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operations that directly support the daily life of our campus community.

This position plays a vital role in maintaining the smooth operation of university programs across 2,000 acres of landscape and 14.6 million square feet of facilities, serving over 33,000 students and 7,500 faculty and staff. Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on cars, vans, trucks, trailers, and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and complex system repairs to ensure vehicles meet safety and performance standards.
  • Use diagnostic tools, scanners, and inspection techniques to identify issues and complete repairs efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate service records, monitor repair trends, and recommend improvements for reliability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Perform physical work, including lifting up to 30 lbs. frequently (and 60 lbs. occasionally), bending, reaching, and maneuvering around vehicles—with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Serve as essential personnel, available to support operations during adverse weather or campus closures.

  • This position is essential, requiring the employee to work during adverse weather conditions and potentially even when the University is closed for normal operations.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Experience in the field of work related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel vehicles.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer systems for recordkeeping and communication.
  • Proven ability to build strong vendor relationships and contribute to cost-effective fleet management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and service excellence in a maintenance or fleet environment.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
