Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director will help to create an environment that will maximize the student’s personal growth and encourage independent decision-making. The Assistant Director will assist the Upward Bound Director in meeting program goals and objectives. This position is grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funds.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Program Director in coordinating and supervising the activities scheduled for the summer and academic year components.
- Coordinate and supervise program activities in the absence of the program director.
- Provide career, personal and academic counseling on a one to one and group basis to all program participants.
- Be responsible for the testing and evaluation of all program participants. Such tests will include the standardized tests enrollees must take upon entry to the program as well as pre and post-tests at the beginning and the end of each program year.
- Maintain a file on each program participant and see to it that all documentation required by the U.S. Department of Education is included in each individual file.
- Provide the Upward Bound participants with information and assistance regarding college and university admission requirements, financial aid, as well as other information and/or assistance that might aid the high school student make a successful transition to the college environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Upward Bound Program Director that will support program efforts.

Required:- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Business Administration or related field.
- At least one year of experience developing and providing college preparatory instruction, tutoring, academic advising, assessment, standardized testing, and/or enrichment activities.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Master’s degree.
- Experience in a higher education setting, with demonstrated administrative experience with program development or project management.
- Experience with budgets and supervision.
- Experience working with Upward Bound, other TRIO programs, or other programs focused on students who are academically disadvantaged.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to counsel students who need guidance in career and college financial planning.
- Awareness of career programs and activities at different colleges.
- Knowledge and/or experience with testing and evaluation procedures.
- Awareness and/or experience with financial aid procedures and sources.
- Must be able to establish and maintain a high degree of rapport with students and their parents.
- Willingness to actively participate in activities with students and develop a trusting relationship.
- Ability to demonstrate empathetic and attentive behavior toward the students.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity of student’s disclosures.
- Must be able to communicate with the parents of the students in the program and those who are applying.
- Must be proficient with computers.
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

This is a grant funded position and it is subject to availability of funds.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.
