General Notes

This position may perform work both in-person and remotely, as determined by supervisor and the needs of the college. This position may occasionally be required to work additional hours or weekends as needed to complete time-sensitive projects or facilitate research and discovery.

Purpose

The Research Associate reports to Dr. Kimberly Nixon, Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology in the College of Pharmacy to support and contribute to the research mission of the Nixon neuropharmacology laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out experiments

  • Scholarly inquiry – immersion in literature, writing up of experimental results and manuscripts

  • Contribute to lab management

  • Work as part of a team to create the alcohol model

  • Supervise and manage undergraduates as well as laboratory technicians as needed

  • Professional development training

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD and at least 5 years of demonstrated experience with animal models of alcohol use disorder, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, learning behavior and at least 1 year of experience with electrophysiology.

  • Proficiency in immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, electrophysiology,. ELISAs, Assays of fear conditioning behavior and Morris water maze, as well as both oral and written scientific communication.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in and at least 6 years experience with binge models of alcohol exposure, use of an Analox for determination of blood ethanol concentrations, tissue processing and conduct of ELISAs and brain histological methods including fluorescent immunohistochemistry, brightfield and confocal microscopy, and strong written and oral communication skills

  • We are seeking an ideal candidate to function at a high level in the laboratory managing projects and people, supervising and conducting scientific research inclusive of the animal model and experiments, as well as writing manuscripts, presenting data at national and international meetings, and contributing to grant applications.

Salary Range

$65,000+ depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
