The Nurse Tutor Specialist (NTS) provides supplemental academic support to students who are active Project BEYOND-2 participants and have encountered social determinants of education and health that can add to their challenges in college and differentially impact their successful academic performance. The NTS will also provide study skills counseling and coaching for students in collaboration with the project’s Mentor/Advisor Specialists and Project Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Consult with small groups & individual students to identify their needs in a variety of academic subjects and offer review and other resources to address those needs.

2. Supplement students’ understanding and command of the course material and topics within the discipline area of expertise for which the students are seeking assistance outside of class.

3. Maintain a thorough knowledge of the course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies to accommodate various student learning styles.

4. Conduct small group and one-on-one tutorial sessions, in-person or virtual, for a variety of nursing courses, particularly those with a science emphasis, by providing study strategies and assistance with academic reading, retention of material, etc.

5. Help students develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills, including time management and test-taking strategies in preparation for course exams

6. Meet with students at appointed times (either in-person/virtual as small groups or individually)

7. Maintain documentation of NTS student interactions.
a. Keep records of reviews & meetings with students as progress notes and entries in the PB-2 codebook
b. Assist the NWD project [PB-2] team to best meet student learning needs

8. Create supplemental instructional materials (such as handouts, slide presentations, etc.) that reinforce concepts/skills taught in tutorials and classes.

9. Locate and evaluate various media (books, digital tools, websites, etc.), equipment, and other resources to support student success
a. Work in conjunction with faculty to provide students with assistance/resources to aid them in completing assignments and meeting course objectives.
b. Provide students preparing for exams with study resources and direction that support faculty information.

10. Provide, in return, course instructor(s) with communication/information that can be used to facilitate student learning of course content, after reviewing with Project Coordinator and team.

11. Hold special study sessions upon the request of instructors, students, project team, with approval of the Project Coordinator.

12. Learn, become proficient in, and implement software that is available to students to enhance their learning.

13. Assist students in learning how to use technology relevant to 
coursework Office 365 platform, Microsoft Office suite, D2L online course platform, teaching aids, models, etc.).

14. Take appropriate initiative and accept responsibility within the job parameters of a NTS.

15. Engage in ongoing training and development, in consultation with the Project Coordinator, to not only grow in role, but also to expand and enhance services offered to students

16. Assist Project Staff with open houses and other recruitment efforts.

17. Perform other related duties as may be required, assigned, or requested by the Project Coordinator or PB-2 staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

BSN degree and RN licensure in WI

• Approximately 6 months of practice experience as an RN since graduation, to enhance practical application of the content, concepts, and materials that students may find difficult to learn theoretically

• Knowledge of subject matter in science courses that s/he will reinforce, including nursing skills and experience

• Skills in interpersonal communication (both oral and written)

• Strong commitment to high quality instruction for undergraduate students in a diverse, student-centric environment. 

• Must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Ability to:
  • Work with students with various learning styles from diverse backgrounds
  • Engage a variety of strategies with appropriate sensitivity to students’ various learning styles
  • Work with small groups or individual students who are from diverse social and academic backgrounds
  • Learn, become proficient at, and implement software available to enhance students’ understanding of challenging course material

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A strong performance record while an undergraduate nursing student overall, and particularly in the sciences, to provide knowledge, skills, and abilities needed in an educational setting, including experience with computer applications and digital technologies that can be used to assist a variety of student learning styles.
