Position Summary

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at University at Buffalo (UB) invites candidates to apply for a position at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level to be known as Professor of Empire Innovation. Selected candidates will receive support through the SUNY Empire Innovation Program (EIP) which recognizes high caliber faculty with proven track records of externally funded research.

We invite applications from prominent leaders in the broad fields of AI and Biotechnology. Priority will be given to research areas such as AI-assisted diagnostics, AI-accelerated drug discovery and development, AI-enabled personalized medicine, AI-optimized healthcare delivery, and AI-enhanced biomanufacturing.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a joint venture between the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the Jacob’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (JSMBS). Previous University investments in faculty and facilities have enabled BME Department to play a key role in the expanding biomedical and biotechnology corridor in the Buffalo-Niagara region.

The successful candidate should have a record of scholarly accomplishments, a sustained externally funded research program, and teaching experience. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program, teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, and advise students at all levels.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with scientists, engineers and clinicians in a multidisciplinary research environment spanning all Schools of the University as well as the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, the Gates Vascular Institute, the Jacobs Institute, the New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Great Lakes Cancer Care Collaborative. Additionally, the newly launched Innovation Hub provides opportunities and resources to commercialize technology and launch new companies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must possess a PhD or MD/PhD in biomedical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, service and mentoring.
  • Candidates should be internationally recognized scholars as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, citations and sustained externally funded research programs.
