The Learning Spaces & Services (LSS) department, part of the Student Success division, provides dynamic services, spaces, and technologies to enable all forms of learning, discovery, and research. The department leads a range of programs and initiatives that support student learning, access to essential tools and resources, and undergraduate student success. The department provides students’ first introduction to the Libraries through a variety of outreach and orientation events and supports in-person and digital instruction in first-year writing and public speaking programs. LSS has overall responsibility for the Studios, a collection of learning spaces at the Hill and Hunt Libraries including the Makerspace, Maker Studio, Gaming & VR Studio, iPearl Innovation Studio, Digital Media Studios, and the NC State Gaming and Esports Lab, along with the Learning Commons and several additional teaching labs. Through its workshops, programs, and activities, students and faculty in all disciplines can explore and apply tools and systems for prototyping and making, 3D modeling, and virtual environments, along with audio and video digital media creation. The department also supports the Ask Us service at the Hill and Hunt Libraries.

Essential Job Duties

The University Library Specialist (ULS) is responsible for providing expert assistance to patrons in the NC State University Libraries Studios. The position manages day-to-day operations of the Hunt Library Maker Studio, a teaching and learning space that provides resources involving hand tools, textiles, fabrication, and design to all NC State students, staff, and faculty regardless of prior experience, as well as the Hunt media spaces including Audio Rooms, Media Studios, and VR Room. Responsibilities include hiring, training and supervising student employees, upholding the Libraries’ standards for great customer service, and ensuring proper use and maintenance of tools and technologies within the Maker Studio. The position contributes to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for new and returning users of the space. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Studios Management:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Maker Studio and the Hunt library media spaces, ensuring a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for all users, regardless of prior experience or academic discipline.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and efficient use of Studios resources and equipment.
  • Help develop and implement policies that enhance the user experience and ensure optimal functioning of the space.
  • Guide users in use of tools and equipment through moment-of-need assistance and workshops and other training opportunities.

Student Supervision and Mentorship:
  • Recruit, oversee, and guide a group of student assistants, making sure they receive the necessary training to offer outstanding assistance and advice within the Studios.
  • Create a collaborative team environment that emphasizes skill development, customer service, and a passion for making and learning.

Making and Digital Media Support:
  • Maintain a strong understanding of making and digital media technologies, including some combination of textiles (e.g., sewing & digital embroidery), fabrication (e.g., 3D modeling & 3D printing), electronics (e.g., basic circuitry & soldering), audio (e.g., podcasting & music production), video (e.g., videography and post production), or graphic design (e.g., digital illustration & vector graphics).
  • Support NC State campus community events like NC State Collegiate Game Jam, Make-A-Thon and State of the Sciences.
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in the making, digital media, and educational fields, integrating them into the Studios.

Additional Duties:
  • Provide regular staffing at the Ask Us center, assisting with the Libraries’ collections, services, and technologies.
  • Collaborate with other departments to enhance the overall learning experience at the Libraries.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or High School diploma or equivalency and five years of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with relevant technologies that support digital media and making
  • Proven experience delivering outstanding customer service
  • Ability to foster a welcoming environment of belonging for the student, faculty, staff, and public visitor community at NC State
  • Ability to hire, train, and supervise a team of student or temporary employees
  • Familiarity with library resources and collections, with the ability to assist with research needs
