POSITION SPECIFICS
Summary of Job:
The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, in Hershey, PA, announces an open faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor (tenure-eligible) to join an internationally-recognized team in the Division of Applied Biomedical Engineering. The applicant must have a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and significant experience in developing mechanical circulatory support (MCS) systems. The Division of Applied Biomedical Engineering consists of 5 faculty with expertise in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, electrical engineering, and biomaterials. In addition, there are 9 full time staff specializing in computational methods, in vitro and in vivo testing, mechanical design, machining, assembly, and polymer fabrication. The Division collaborates closely with surgeons, cardiologists, veterinarians, and commercial partners. The Division focuses on research and development of devices to treat heart and pulmonary failure.
The successful candidate shall have substantial experience in MCS development and computational fluid dynamics with a track record of successful funding from the National Institutes of Health, and a publication record in this area. The candidate shall have experience as a principal investigator managing a multi-disciplinary team.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Engineering design and analysis of mechanical circulatory support systems
- Solicit and obtain extramural funding
- Manage multidisciplinary project teams
- Develop and publish new knowledge and methods
- Collaborate with physicians to define and solve relevant problems in heart failure
- Mentor students and junior faculty
Specific qualifications include:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering and significant experience in developing mechanical circulatory support systems, including computational fluid dynamics
- Strong critical thinking skills, rigorous training in scientific method, and the ability to synthesize scientific literature to generate novel hypotheses
- Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and good communication skills
